Cā;
This describes the new imlac control program which is essentially a
datamedia simulator (hense it uses the datamedia line editor). The imlacs
have the full Stanford character set and the Stanford keyboard unlike the
Datamedias.
Datamedias are described in dm.me[up,doc].
Logging in:
Type "tty dm128". If nothing happens (including the screen is blank but
not the imlac being turned off) then you will have to reload. If the
system types "Stanford A.I. Lab Datamedia Display Service" or something
similiar then you may log in and proceed almost as if you were on a Data
Disc.
Reloading an imlac:
First make sure the system doesn't think you are a datamedia. The reload
won't work if it does. (Logging out and waiting for 10 sec. or so should work)
Now stop the imlac. To do this look at the back upper left. There should be a
small box plugged in with 3 switches marked "stop" "start" "at 40". Press the
"stop" button. Now hold the "at 40" button and press "start". Now (being careful
the shift key is off and to type the exact sequences) type <shift>c fix <shift>m
(for the Quam imlac (now it should be called the Weyhrauch imlac) instead of
<shift>m type <alt>). Wait a few seconds then type <ctrl><top><shift>s. The
loading should start. After 20 sec. 4 digits will appear on the screen and count
up. This is the current memory location being stored into and when it reaches
about 3300 the loading should be done. After a few seconds it will type
"checksum ok" and put you back into monitor mode. If nothing happened your imlac
is probably broken. Gripe.
The Stanford imlacs have the full Stanford keyboard and so the strange datamedia
typins aren't necessary. If the system thinks you are an Imlac line you
have to say tty dm to change the line type to a datamedia. Logging out changes
it back.
Several problems and strangenesses:
1. If your tabs seem to be wrong try "tty tabs" to reset the tabs. They may
have not have gotten set correctly when when you started up.
2. To hold, use <ctrl><break> as on a Data Disc but this toggles unlike a
Data Disc. To unhold, use <ctrl><break> again. Do NOT use <ctrl><clear>
to unhold--that does something else entirely, namely flush any currently
going on output of any kind (wholine, line editor, page printer, user
program, etc.).
3. As noted above, reloading may be done only on a line which is not
currently a datamedia line. If you are currently in DM mode, logging out
will usually get you out of DM mode in about 10 seconds.
4. If the imlac is alive when you want to reload, then just do this:
a. At monitor level, type FIXIML.
b. When the program puts out a *, type
<CONTROL><TOP>B (Sends the IMLAC to its loader)
<CONTROL><TOP><SHIFT>S (Starts the loader)
